Selected candidates will be used district-wide. Work hours will vary and are based on district needs

SUBSTITUTE BUS DRIVER

 

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision by the Transportation Coordinator, to drive a school bus over an assigned route in a safe and efficient manner in the transportation of students, and to do other related work as may be required.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Drive a school bus over designated routes according to established time schedules, pick up and discharge pupils at designated stops;
  • Escort pupils across streets when necessary;
  • Supervise the conduct of pupils being transported following District policy;
  • May transport pupils and teachers on various special event trips;
  • Rinse, sweep, polish interiors and perform regular daily safety checks on buses and report mechanical defects if any are noted;
  • Keep simple records such as daily log of route miles traveled and pupils transported, and may make related reports in the Transportation Department office;
  • Refuel, check oil level, water and check tires, brakes, gauges, electrical systems, warning lights and buzzers, emergency fire extinguishers and flares, and emergency exits and doors;
  • May suggest route changes and stops;
  • Map route times, and take practice runs as necessary to become familiar with routes;
  • Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips;
  • Report all accidents and complete required

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

 

KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Safe driving practices and techniques;
  • Operation of large transportation vehicles and the laws governing their use;
  • Basic safety checks and preventive maintenance requirements of automobile equipment;
  • Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Title 13 Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of

ABILITY TO

  • Drive a school bus and other transportation equipment safely and efficiently;
  • Maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus or other transportation equipment;
  • Learn proven methods for bus servicing and safety checks;
  • Perform simple record keeping and clerical duties;
  • Write reports and correspondence;
  • Work independently;
  • Perform repetitive tasks and manage multiple tasks;
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals;
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measures, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals;
  • Respond appropriately to directions and changes in working assignments;
  • Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses;
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and those contacted in the course of work.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of successful driving experience with a demonstrated record of safe driving. Experience driving a school bus or equivalent passenger transportation vehicle is desirable; Possession of knowledge & abilities listed above.

 

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

  • Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License;
  • Have an acceptable driving record and qualify for insurability by the District's authorized insurance carrier;
  • Possession of a California Special Driver's Certificate;
  • Possession of a Standard Red Cross First Aid Certificate or equivalent, or pass a test administered by the

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

 

The physical demands and working conditions requirement indicated below are examples of the demands that must be performed in carrying out the essential job functions.

 

Physical Demands: Sitting to drive, reaching (continuously); stand, walk, bend, stoop, push, pull, twist neck and trunk (occasionally); lift/carry up to 50 pounds, including equipment and small children (occasionally); grasp and manipulate objects and steering wheel (up to continuously); use seeing, hearing and speaking.

 

Working Conditions: Work outdoors and indoors, including bus; exposure to seasonal outdoor temperatures 38- 110; dust, wind and sun; traffic and fuel odors, graffiti removal solvent and proximity to moving machinery (occasionally); vibration (up to continuously).

SUBSTITUTE AUTOMOBILE DRIVER – TRANSPORTATION

 

 

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, a person who operates an automobile over designated routes transporting school children with special needs, and does other related work as required.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Drives a car daily, or as assigned over designated routes transporting children to and from school;  maintains order among children in the car and at pick-up and drop-off locations;  follows District policies in dealing with the discipline of pupils and contact with parents, staff, and general public;  observes all rules and regulations of the District and state laws and regulations regarding transportation of pupils in a safe and efficient manner;  also responsible for keeping vehicle clean and fueled.

 

LICENSE/REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a current and valid California Drivers’ License.  Current DMV printout will be required.

 

EDUCATION

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED), and possession of knowledge and abilities listed above.

 

SPECIAL REQUIRMENTS

  • Experience:  One year of paid or volunteer experience working with children of various age levels requiring a specialized learning environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of:
  • Safe driving practices;
  • First Aid practices.
  • Ability to: 
  • Deal effectively with children with special needs;
  • Maintain a pleasing personality and to get along well with children and adults;
  • Maintain simple records;
  • Work independently without supervision;
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
